Hello, fellow crocheters! I am designer Natalia Kononova, and I am absolutely thrilled to invite you to join the Petalique Make-A-Long (MAL), hosted in wonderful collaboration with Scheepjes! 🎉
This time, I might have lost my mind a little bit. We aren't doing just one pattern. We are doing THREE overlay mosaic crochet patterns at the exact same time.
Mark your calendars (and clear your crochet hooks): we start on July 1st, 2026. We’ll have 4 weeks of fun together, but please don't feel rushed - go entirely at your own pace. You will have my full support, along with the amazing Scheepjes team, throughout your Petalique journey.

"Natalia, Why Are There So Many Patterns?!"
Because I have no self-control, and because whenever you put a bunch of crocheters together in a testing group, they turn into a rogue idea generator! We usually start testing one simple thing, and somehow we end up creating a small empire of variations. 😂
It all started with a small pillow. Then I thought, "What if it was bigger?" Then I saw a perfect frame at IKEA and thought, "Well, now it's a framed wall hanging." Then I realized it wanted to be a bag... and that the bag wanted to be a different pillow... and, well, here we are.
In fact, that’s the only reason I only have a bag and a blanket prototype right now: the pillows mutated into the bag and the wall hanging, and the wall hanging evolved into the blanket. Are those two finally safe? Honestly, probably NOT! I actually have a few more ideas for this design brewing and I am a master of transformations, so... it's definitely not over! :))

1. Pillow / Wall Hanging Pattern
(Best with Scheepjes Whirl / Whirlette)

Smaller Pillow: Smaller size, no border, with a clean double crochet back.
Bigger Pillow: Bigger size by just adding a border to a smaller pillow.
Wall Hanging: Essentially, we are framing the big pillow front because art belongs on walls (and crochet is art).

2. Bag / Pillow Pattern
(Best with Scheepjes Whirlette)

Bag: Make it a handbag or a shoulder bag just by changing the handle length.
Double-Sided Pillow: Features the mosaic design on both sides, exactly like the bag.
Tester Projects:
The pillows and the bag are designed specifically for Scheepjes Whirl and Whirlette yarn. I highly recommend sticking to this yarn weight for these specific pieces—if you try to use a thicker yarn, the final project might turn out way too big, especially the bag!
For the blanket, however, you have a lot more freedom to play with texture and size. We have gorgeous versions stitched up in:
Classic Whirl and Whirlette
Cotton Whirl and Whirlette (which will give you a slightly larger blanket)
Stone Washed or Stone Washed Flow (sport weight for a cozier feel)
And remember, if your couch is already overflowing with blankets but you completely love the design, you can use that exact same blanket pattern with Maxi Sugar Rush yarn (lace weight) to create a stunning table topper instead!

My Blanket Prototype Color Recipe
Hook Size: 3.0 mm
Finished Size: 106 cm / 41 ¾"
Total yarn: 970 g
Scheepjes Whirl (60% Cotton x 40% Acrylic, 215-225g/ 1000m/ 1094yds)
2 skeins (300 g) in 769 Blackberry Mint Chip
Scheepjes Whirlette (60% Cotton x 40% Acrylic, 100g/ 455m/ 497.6yds)
5 skeins (479 g) in 860 Ice
2 skeins (191 g) in 885 Plum – matches Whirl
For my own prototype, I used 5 Whirlette cakes for the background. For the contrasting design, I used 2 Whirl cakes plus 2 Whirlette cakes that perfectly matched the darker end of the Whirl.
To make the color changes a bit more exciting, I actually divided the first Whirl between all the rounds of the inner square so every single color could be displayed. Then, I framed it by making the first border with the matching dark Whirlette, worked the second Whirl exactly as it was, and finished off the rest of the blanket with the matching dark Whirlette once that second Whirl ran out!
