Petalique Bag and Pillow

Some designs come together quietly, and some burst onto the scene—Petalique did a bit of both. It started as a decorative pillow, but once I saw the motif come to life, I just knew it had to become a bag too.

The Petalique Bag has a bold, floral front that brings all the drama, and a simpler, rhythmic back that keeps things flowing. I made sure the back still looks pretty—it’s easier after the more challenging front, but still fun and surprisingly hard to put down.

I use mine all the time: it’s sturdy, spacious, and pretty much guaranteed to get compliments. If you like your projects with a mix of statement and simplicity, this one might be just your thing.

This pattern includes:

• Written instructions in American crochet terminology for a tote / shoulder bag and a pillow, diagrams / charts, videos for stitches, techniques, and first few rounds, instructions for finishing.

• Handles: 27 cm (10 ½'') hand-bag or 60 cm (23 ½'') shoulder-bag

• Fingering/ 4ply weight yarn such as:
  Scheepjes Whirlette (60% Cotton x 40% Acrylic, 100g/ 455m/ 497.6yds)
  or Scheepjes Whirl (60% Cotton x 40% Acrylic, Fingering/ 4 ply weight, 215-225g/ 1000m)

 

1) Bag:

Total: 320 (340) g for a hand-bag (shoulder-bag)

- Yarn1 (background): 2 Whirlette / 195 (215) g in 868 Bilberry

Including:

Front: 65 g, Back: 70 g, Bottom: 20 g, Upper edge backing: 15 g, Handles: 25 (45) g

- Yarn2 (contrast): 2 Whirlette / 125 g in 860 Ice

Including:

2) Pillow:

• 80 cm x 7 cm (31 ½'' x 2 ¾'') piece of stiff stabilizer to reinforce the upper edge

• Optional for reinforcing the bottom: 24 cm x 10.5 cm (9 ½'' x 4 ⅛'') piece of plastic canvas

• Sewing machine, sewing thread (match lining and handles)
