The Quest for the Perfect Double Crochet Triangle (And My "Triangle Queen" Moment!)

Hi everyone,

Today, I want to brag just a little bit. Why not, right?

Recently, I spent over five hours intensely focused on solving a design puzzle: developing a perfect double crochet triangle worked from the center.

We are currently testing a new garment pattern which features joined-as-you-go lace triangular motifs. I have been itching to make something else using that same beautiful motif, but for this new project idea, I needed a solid background panel to layer behind it. I’m planning to put these two motifs together, one over the other.

I have actually done a layered motif technique before. If you look at one of my past cardigan designs, the sleeve cuffs are made with four triangular background motifs. But if we are being honest, that older background triangle was not perfect. It had noticeable holes in the corners, and the sides always looked a bit too round.

Naturally, I looked online for tutorials to see if someone had solved this. Everything I could find for a double crochet triangle made from the center had the exact same issues: large chain-space holes in the corners (which are used to pull the shape outward) and bowing, roundish sides. Some patterns managed to eliminate the big holes, but then the sides ended up looking even more round!

So, I sat down and spent an entire day experimenting.

I am incredibly proud of how my new triangle turned out. It has perfectly straight edges and sharp, neat corners—without the gaping holes! It is going to be the foundation for a brand new pattern. I actually have a few ideas brewing for what it will ultimately become, so I am just going to start hooking and see where the yarn takes me.

Now, if you happen to know that a tutorial for this perfect solid double crochet triangle already exists out there and I just couldn't find it... please, do not tell me! 😅 That would mean I spent hours reinventing the bicycle. Let me just enjoy my "Crochet Triangle Queen" moment for a little while!

But seriously, if you have also been searching the internet and couldn't find a good, solid crochet triangle tutorial without those pesky corner holes, let me know in the comments below! It is finally about to happen - I am going to put a tutorial together for you.

I hope you have something wonderful on your hook this week. Thank you so much for reading, and as always, happy crocheting!

Natalia
